There is a group who monitor the Internet to see if there are any illegal images of children/abuse etc. The group doing this monitoring is a private charity with private individuals - not law enforcement.

Get your head around this. A privately owned charity with a turnover of about £1.5M actively searches the Internet to find illegal images of children being abused.

The group is based in Cambridge England and they are called the Internet Watch Foundation. Sir Richard Tilt is a Trustee of the IWF but he also happens to be a Patron of the Lucy Faithfull Foundation.

Don't get me wrong and I'm not accusing anyone of anything but doesn't this mean they are obtaining illegal images of child pornography? I mean, how else can they do that monitoring at the IWF?

Chris Martin BTW, with the IWF, your ISP sticks traffic through a filter, based on a encrypted database that the IWF supply to ISPs. The ISPs have no idea what they are blocking. However anyone with knowledge of how Proxys or VPNs work would easily be able to bypass this.

Steve Marsden Hi Chris. I saw their blocking of Wikipedia. I agree with you that there is a role for someone to do this but surely that is each ISP's responsibility. They say Google is the biggest porn collection in the world so you can infer they also have a large kiddie porn collection as well. But why should a self-created Quango (it isn't really a charity is it!) do this? How can private individuals claim to be policemen of the Internet? That means they must be actively searching for child porn - something that is illegal if anyone else does it.

Chris Martin Google cache pretty much everything, other services ISPs run Cache what their users are hitting to save them bandwidth costs.God only knows what some of that content is. The only way to really deal with this is to shut the primary hosts down. putting these type of blocks in are just going to push things into the underworld of the Internet or this 'Dark Net' people are talking about. BTW. The Album cover that screwed Wikipedia up a few years ago is still on sale in all good record shops, so I question the effectiveness of bothering to block it.

Steve Marsden Denny, there is something even more sinister to take into account. People are ending up dead: Jimmy Savile, Cyril Smith, George Smith, Jill Dando, Ray Wyre. Even Mrs Fenn passed away. Were they all natural deaths? I mean Ray Wyre was only 56.

Steve Marsden Brian, in 1998 I was moving my business into some new office space above the Crown Prosecution Service. The CPS were using this large vacant office floor to store boxes of cases. The boxes were knee deep in several thousand square feet. When I took a carpet salesman in there to measure up, we noticed a lot of boxes were spilled open and files were strewn in a big mess. Some were photo albums. We looked at a couple before we had to stop - they were murder cases with bodies and all the gory stuff. That wasn't corruption - just blatant ineptitude by not securing those boxes and files properly.

Steve Marsden I half thought about going to the paper with it Brian. At the time I looked at the office suite I wanted to lease, it was open to anyone to come in and view it.
