Twitter trolls posted vile messages about the parents of Madeleine McCann yesterday in the run up to the Crimewatch appeal on their missing daughter.
Kate and Gerry McCann were subjected to appalling taunts as they prepared to go on TV to discuss the case.
One troll tweeted a mocked-up picture of the McCanns as Moors murderers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady.

Others cruelly claimed Mr McCann, who has been ruled out of the Scotland Yard investigation, looked like the e-fit images of the force’s new prime suspect.
There were also ‘deeply upsetting’ suggestions from other trolls that the McCanns should be prosecuted for leaving Maddie alone in the family’s holiday apartment.
Internet forums on the McCann case were also awash with disgusting remarks about the Leicestershire couple.

It was the mocked up picture of the McCanns as Hindley and Brady which particularly disgusted friends of the couple.
One described the image, which was retweeted by other trolls, as ‘completely beyond the pale’ and there was mounting speculation last night that it could trigger police action.
Detectives are now monitoring the Internet for vile messages about the McCanns.

A spokesman for the McCanns said: ‘Kate and Gerry do not dignify this sort of abusive material with any comment.
‘But if necessary offensive tweets are brought to the attention of the police.’
In July this year, police arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of harassment after Twitter abuse was aimed at a feminist campaigner and a female MP.
Caroline Criado Perez and Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy both complained about being sent vicious tweets on the site.
Labour MP Stella Creasy was told on Twitter she would be tracked down and raped while Tory MP Claire Perry received death threats relating to her fight against pornography on the internet.
Feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez suffered similarly vile online messages - leading one alleged abuser to be arrested and bailed.
In September 2012 the country’s chief prosecutor said internet trolls who post one-off offensive messages may escape criminal charges.

Keir Starmer QC said court action would be taken only where there was a ‘sustained campaign of harassment’ or a direct threat. This, he said, was necessary, to protect free speech.
The Director of Public Prosecutions made his comments as he announced that a semi-professional footballer who posted a homophobic tweet about Olympic diver Tom Daley would not face criminal charges.
He said the comments were not so ‘grossly offensive’ that they should lead to a prosecution.

Daniel Thomas sent the message about Daley, 18, and diving partner Peter Waterfield, 31, after the pair missed out on a medal at the London Olympics.

Thomas was arrested after the tweet spread around the internet.

It falsely suggested that Daley and Waterfield were in a gay relationship and drew a link between homosexuality and HIV.
Under the 2003 Communications Act, it is an offence to send messages online that are grossly offensive.

CW doesn't seem to have done anything to help finding what happened to Madeleine McCann, but could have intended to help DCI Redwood finding himself an umbrella against a shower of protests.

118 calls after Madeleine appeal
Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have said they have received over 118 calls after they released an e-fit of a man who witnesses claim was carrying a blonde child in the Praia da Luz area on the night she went missing.

Scotland Yard has turned the inquiry on its head. Establishing that the Jane Tanner sighting was a "red herring" has opened up possibilities that were all but ruled out by previous investigators - not least the man seen with a child at 10pm.

The importance detectives have put on tracking that man down suggests they may have other information about him they haven't shared; perhaps phone records hold the key, as detectives indicated 10 days ago.

The question as to why it has taken six years for the Tanner sighting to be bottomed out and why e-fits of the 10pm suspect, compiled five years ago, have only now been publicised are uncomfortable ones - but are probably best addressed to the Portuguese authorities, who conducted the first investigation.

I watched Crimewatch last night and what a load of rubbish it was. Why did you not show how the so called Abductor got in and out with Maddie? WHY was the DOGS not shown in which they found evidence? What about the 48 questions Kate McCann did not answer? WHY are the McCann's being protected? This case has gone on now for 6 and half years, when is all the going to stop and the POLICE see through these people. Why was the car not shown with Evidence?

You know the people involved so why put e-fit photo up? I am totally disgusted with our SO CALLED POLICE FORCE. This needs to be investigated by another POLICE FORCE that we can trust and who are truthful and not afraid to tell the truth. I have more faith in the Portuguese Police Force, they tell the truth. I hope you are not going to arrest an Innocent person just so the MCCANN'S walk away free, they neglected their children and yet they according to them have done nothing wrong.

I just hope the police can hold their head up and feel shame for what they have not done in my opinion. By the way your E-FIT looks like Gerry McCann who was sitting there with the usual smirk on his face and thinking we are free, we have fooled the public and the Police, and also been very clever to set up a fund and take money from the public supposed to help find Maddie, not pay their mortgage.

Following last night's BBC1 Crimewatch programme on which DCI Andy Redwood appealed for information into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, officers are extremely pleased with the response from the public.

Officers responded to calls and emails which were generated as a result of the appeal. Calls and emails came into the Crimewatch studio, the Incident Room at Belgravia and the call centre at Hendon.

DCI Andy Redwood, said: "We are extremely pleased with the response to the Crimewatch appeal. The incident room is following up a number of enquiries, having received over 300 calls and over 170 emails with specific lines of enquiry. We will now take the time to follow up these lines of enquiry.

"Our appeal continues and later today I will be travelling to Holland, and tomorrow Germany, to continue the appeal for information.

"Madeleine remains at the heart of everything we do and I will continue to update the McCann family as more information is received by the incident room."

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have shifted the emphasis of their inquiry to an Irish family’s evidence after discovering that a notorious presumed sighting of the girl being taken away from her holiday apartment was a false lead.

Detectives from London’s Metropolitan police (the Met) now believe that a man with dark, collar-length hair seen carrying a pyjama-clad child almost outside the McCann family’s apartment in Praia da Luz, southern Portugal, at about 9.15pm on May 3rd, 2007, was in fact an innocent British holidaymaker returning his own child from a night creche.

In the light of what police describe as “a revelation moment”, altering six years of thinking about the case, investigating officers now believe Madeleine could have been taken up to 45 minutes later in the evening.

The discovery had brought “a shift of emphasis”, said Det Chief Insp Andy Redwood, leading the inquiry: “We’re almost certain now that this sighting is not the abductor. But very importantly, what it says is that from 9.15pm we’re able to allow the clock to continue forward. In doing so, things that were not seen as significant or have not received the same attention are now the centre of our focus.”

Drogheda couple Martin and Mary Smith were holidaying on the Algarve at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance with their daughter Aoife, son Peter and other family members. The man police now want to contact was spotted by the Smiths at about 10pm walking down the hill from the Ocean Club complex towards either the beach or the town centre, carrying a blond child aged about three or four, who was most probably wearing pyjamas.

The Smith family gave a statement to police soon after their holiday. The efits were compiled by private detectives in September 2008. However, Det Chief Insp Redwood said that for years the sighting was seen as “wrong place, wrong time” and thus unimportant.

Police are also seeking to identify a pair of blond men seen lurking around the holiday centre about the time of the disappearance, and a group of presumed bogus charity collectors who targeted nearby apartments – working on the possibility that Madeleine’s abduction was carefully planned.

But the key breakthrough since the Met launched its inquiry in July this year concerns Jane Tanner, among the group of friends dining with Kate and Gerry McCann on May 3rd as Madeleine and her younger twin siblings, S*** and A*****, slept 50m away.

Ms Tanner went to check on her own children at about 9pm, around the same time Gerry McCann looked in on his – the last time the family saw Madeleine. About 15 minutes later, Ms Tanner recounted, she saw the man carrying a young child in pyjamas almost directly outside the McCanns’ apartment. From 2007 onwards, Portuguese and British police presumed any abduction most probably took place between 8.30pm, when the McCanns went to dinner, and 9.15pm.

A new police photograph of the man wearing similar clothes to those worn that evening is remarkably similar to an artist’s sketch based on Ms Tanner’s recollection.

The Tanner sighting had “dominated up to now”, admitted Det Chief Insp Redwood. “It has meant the focus was always done and dusted by about quarter past. Now it takes us forward to 10pm.”

Despite the detailed briefings, police warn that speculation about imminent arrests is premature. Det Chief Insp Redwood said: “It is about trying to understand who, precisely, these people are. Our absolute priority is to whittle them down.”

I'm just wondering... for a non-English-speaking person, on hearing a Brit with a strong Glaswegian accent, might it be mistaken for another European accent?

On a small resort the workers etc would've gotten to know the kids (the Spanish adore children!) if they'd of witnessed a stranger carrying a child they'd seen on holiday with their parents they'd of alerted other staff etc. I know I would've! No one said anything because she probably looked asleep being carried by her dad!!

Who is this guy with the funny peasant-type blouse split at the side;

Is he really innocent? How do we know?

When, where, why did he come forward? Police records please to convince us.
