A short review of recent developments:

October 14: Crimewatch

It was an abduction, we've got the details of it wrong for the last 6.5 years - but now we've more or less worked it out, Tanner was right, but we were all mistaken to think the bloke was an abductor and so Madeleine was abducted probably nearer 10.00pm - now look out for a bloke seen by an Irishman at about the same time carrying a child in pinkish pyjamas and 'not looking like a tourist' - just to help you here are two efits of him looking like two completely different blokes - besides that here's four more efits just in case you were in Praia da Luz late April or early May 2007 - and don't forget we've got 17,327 documents still to examine, the records of thousands of mobile 'phones in 31 countries to examine (if we can trace the owners), we were already following 195 lines of enquiry over a year ago, we've got 41 'persons of interest' to talk to (once we find them), we have 35 staff working on this and 6 more just equipped in a nice new office in Faro. BBC today

Scotland Yard said Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley and Det Ch Insp Andy Redwood attended a meeting with senior Portuguese officers on 17 October in Lisbon for a briefing on the new lines of enquiry which they say 'are separate' to the lines of inquiry being followed by the Met.

At the end of the meeting the group were joined by Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, who were also briefed on the plans to apply to reopen the investigation.

SKY today

Portugal's public prosecutors approved the move following a request from officers in Oporto who have identified witnesses who were never questioned during the original probe, and have new lines of inquiry and a number of issues they want to clarify

A report from state broadcaster RTP has this evening stated that Kate and Gerry McCann have been excluded as having had any involvement in the disappearance of their daughter.

ITN today

The ITN reporter said she had managed to get an interview with the head detective and he told her the McCanns were being kept in the loop and had been for a briefing a few days ago.

Interview with Theresa May, Home Secretary today

Theresa May says: 'Glad to hear this news...for the sake of Maddie’s parents and her family…we will get resolution of the terrible things that happened to the McCann family…parents will be able to know what did happen to Madeleine...'

Judiciary Police press statement today

Similarly to what happens in all the cases of missing children...the Judiciary Police continued to be attentive to any and all information likely to enable the understanding of the whereabouts of the minor Madeleine McCann. With that objective, the National Director of the Judiciary Police, in March 2011, assigned to a team of investigators from the North Directorate a task to re-examine the whole wide range of information contained in the enquiry That reanalysis task, which took place during the last two and a half years, helped identify new evidence, which...meets the requirements set by article 279º no 1 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for the reopening of the investigation.

I do not.

Redwood's promotion of the alleged Smith sighting continues to have the medeia - and consequently us here - meandering around in circles, amidst the plumes of smoke and a thousands mirrors, when in all probability the Smith sighting, to put it kinldy, is almost certainly a mirage.

The sooner IMO that we look on this as a fake, fabricated sighting, the easier we will be able to make sense of it.

Don't forget that it was 13 days and only after Murat was made an arguido, that Smith 'phoned the Portuguese police - after 13 days of Europe-wide publicity about Madeleine to which he and his family had not responded.

Owning a villa at the Estrela da Luz complex, being a regular visitor to Praia da Luz, and having met Murat 'on several occasions', Smith was able to tell the Portuguese police (after 13 days) that it was dark, 10.00pm, the man's face was hidden, it wasn't Murat, and none of the family could recognise his face again if they saw it.

After saying, 4 months later, that he was 60% to 80% sure he saw Gerry McCann, a year or so later he then apparently helped the likes of Kevin Halligen (convicted fraudster), Henri Exton (ex-MI5 and convicted shoplifter) and Gary Hagland (money laundering expert) to draw up two wholly different efits of the bloke he says he saw - which (allegedly) the McCann Team kept under wraps for 5 years until Redwood gave it the seal of approval.

I am at a total loss to understand why so many on this forum continue to believe that the Smith sighting is some kind of established fact, as if it were some tiny island of certainty in an ocean of lies.

It seems I am having precisely the opposite effect.

The 'Smithman' threads have proved exceptionally popular, bringing in a wave of new members only too anxious to insist that the Smiths really did see a bloke 'not looking like a tourist' and then capable of supplying DCI Redwood and his merry crew with not one but TWO efits of entirely different blokes whose face(s) they never saw in the dark.

I wonder why they've been so keen to join in the discussion?
