I have, over the last couple of years, begun to understand Bennett. Whilst pretending that he is a clever person, using amazingly long and tedious paragraphs to express his hate about so many aspects of society he really is not clever at all. That is his basic problem. He has a very average mind but believes himself to be far more incisive and erudite than he is.
His hatred of homosexuals, of Muslims, of anyone who (in his view) desecrates the bible, of anyone who has (in his view) got away with something he thinks was illegal; his complete indifference to the damage he has admitted to causing his own family (shown by his refusal to stop), all demonstrate that he is an extremely unpleasant individual.
He is, in reality, a narrow-minded, averagely intelligent bigot with an ego which far outweighs his minimal talents.
The internet has allowed Bennett to gather round him people of even less intelligence as toadies and bottom-lickers whose vile characters are revealed more and more blatantly as the McCann case which he cannot leave alone moves towards a possible conclusion (which fortunately for the McCanns will not point to any crime by them).
Bennett's bigotry and egotism have both been clear since the early days when he was hounding publishers about forewords to biblical texts. His references to Muslims and non-Christians prove he is a bigot. The tens of thousands (literally) references to him online and his address and his phone number exposing his family to potential ridicule since his children were at school is proof of his egotism.
Those are issues for him and his family and his God to deal with, though I doubt that the hatred Bennett actually expresses in his "poetry" for example would endear him to any God I've heard of.
But (and considering he was once briefly, until his disgraceful behaviour put an end to the 'career', a solicitor) his complete inability to understand law and his total disregard for the basics of law such as the presumption of innocence, the right to freedom from harassment, the right not to be libelled by such as himself etc. is a different level of problem. That is a problem that society should deal with.
He is both committing illegal acts himself and very clearly encouraging others to do the same with his constant interference in police matters. He has been punished once for his inability to refrain from libel and has learned no lesson from that punishment.
He may believe that a second offence will be dealt with as a new matter and of course it will till sentencing when the Judge will take into account the leniency with which Mr Justice Tugendhat dealt with him. The Judge will also be shown the video where Bennett himself thought that he was deserving of and about to be given an actual custodial sentence, where he expressed sorrow for his actions and gave notice that he would refrain from such actions in the future, in other words where he lied yet again about his own behaviour.
Bennett has such a warped understanding of law that perhaps he thinks no further action is going to be brought against him. He is wrong.
And in the last few hours he has gone further than ever before (in my view) with his libel. He has now clearly written in public wholly libellous claims about the McCanns' legal team.
I began this post by saying that Bennett is of average intelligence but has learnt to use lots of words to cover up that fact. His most recent actions have made me wonder whether he is not in fact simply a thick pillock with no ability whatsoever to envisage what outcomes may result from his actions.
Insane, thick, or genuinely malicious (towards not just the McCanns but his own family)? Whichever, the one thing I maintain is that he is a very unpleasant individual who deserves whatever punishment the law will mete out when he next gets taken to court (and that punishment will not be as lenient as in the past).
ps There is, I believe, a simple reason why Bennett has not yet been dragged back into court but the time will come when that reason no longer prevents the inevitable further action against him.
