Sick Facebook page mocking Madeleine McCann pulled amid mass condemnation
Dec 10, 2014 22:36 By John Ferguson, David Taylor, Jennifer Hyland
IMMEDIATE calls for the sick joke to be removed from the social network were backed by Scottish Tory MSP Margaret Mitchell.
MISSING Madeleine McCann has been mocked on a sick Facebook page.
An anonymous account named “Coatbridge Dirtys” uploaded a picture of Madeleine and added the caption, “Anyone on it? Still no been hame”.
There were immediate calls for the slur to be removed from the site.
But the heartless image remained online until the Record contacted Facebook. Scottish Tory MSP Margaret Mitchell condemned the page. She said: “ Social media can be abused to cause people distress .”
Facebook refused to comment on the incident but the page was taken down shortly after the Record contacted them.
Madeleine, then aged three, disappeared in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007 .
Her Glasgow-born father Gerry has said online abuse has caused “severe distress” to his family.
He added: “People are threatening to kidnap our children and also threatening violence against my wife Kate and I.”
