The programme marks the 10th anniversary of the girl’s disappearance in Praia da Luz.

And his wild theory comes hours after Kate and Gerry McCann, of Rothley, Leics, described on TV their hopes Madeleine was still alive.

Shameless Amaral, booted off the original inquiry, has always claimed Kate and Gerry were involved in their daughter’s death. Now, in the TV interview, he says her body may have been hidden in a British woman’s coffin and cremated.

He is interviewed in Praia da Luz and suggests the key to the disappearance was the church where Kate and Gerry prayed.

He said: “We had information three figures went into the church via a side door at night. They had a box and there was to be a cremation of a British woman. It is possible the child’s remains were in this box and cremated as well. The parents had the key to the church.”

The couple were made formal suspects in the case in September 2007 but that line of inquiry was later dropped.

Yesterday the Catholic priest at the church offered prayers for Madeleine.
Meanwhile, tourism chief Julio Barroso said: “Things are starting to pick up, but it’s taken ten years.”

He has come up with this one because he thinks he can not be disproved and cannot be asked to support it with evidence. However, this is not true...

1) did those who carried the coffin notice it being two or three stones heavier,?

2) did those who saw the coffin notice it had been pryed open since this would leave visible damage?

3) crematoriums are supposed to keep records about the output which indicates how much was actually cremated per funeral as it were. They know pretty much how much ash a cremation will result in. If there was an extra body even a smaller one of just two or three stones it will show up. So why did amaral not speak to staff there, why did he not get the records?

4) and when was this supposed to have happened? The McCanns were followed everywhere by the media. The idea that they could remove a decomposing body, carry it through town, and break open a coffin and hide it there without anyone noticing, catching it on film is impossible. Crematorium staff, if not people in the church would have smelt a decomposing body I am afraid.

[Amaral] There were never any motives to question the Catholic church. There is no indice that points towards the child being there, at least up to the moment when she was transported in the car. Even because there are no freezers there, or cold spots that would allow for the body to be kept at that location.
